(Maybe no Vulkan support yet?) You can basically use Windows as "Linux distro with a kind of shitty window manager" right now if you want by installing everything but games in WSL, which is kind of funny. I gave it a try out of curiosity and it's really good, was able to run Godot's editor and some native steam games I tested, but no luck with Proton. Seamless GUI application support (including start/taskbar/pinning/etc.) with GPU acceleration and audio. That's what it's been like in the Insider Preview builds for months.

I think eventually windows will get full desktop Linux apps running with very little performance hit.

But in the consoles the GPU and CPU are cache coherent.Īnyway, I'd need to look into APUs on PC a bit more to know of they are still pretending they are seperate.

Unless things have wildly changed (which would change the drivers a lot between APU and GPU) this reserved area is treated as if it's not part of system ram. They reserve part of your system memory as GPU memory. On PC even with an APU you don't quite do things the same way as they do on consoles. So you'll need to sync up the CPU/GPU copies of the framebuffers. That's going to be a bottleneck.Īlso, like with other console emulation, it means the CPU can't just muck with the fame buffers and stuff because it's over on the GPU. Then probably mangle the commands sent to the GPU as your buffers aren't in system ram. On PC your going to have to do things in RAM, insert copy commands and move it to the GPU. Which is why they went with the higher latency but higher throughput GDDR ram for the whole system. This means no copying stuff into the GPU ram. They are APUs and use one pool of GDDR ram for system and GPU. You're also forgetting the flat memory architecture.
